The deep desire to feel important is a fundamental part of human nature. It is our need to feel that we are worth, that we contribute our part to the society, and that we are considered. But this need of ours can have a positive aspect and contribute to our well-being, or it can have a negative aspect with the opposite results. The influence that this need exerts on our lives depends mainly on the criterion and motive with which we associate our importance.
When do we feel truly important?
The sense of importance is subjective and varies from person to person. By extension, there are many factors that can affect when we feel important, such as:
Achievements: When we achieve our goals, whether personal or professional, we feel a sense of satisfaction and significance.
Relationships: Strong relationships with our family, friends, partners, clients and colleagues make us feel important, thus boosting our self-esteem.
Recognition: When others recognize and appreciate our achievements and efforts, we feel affirmed and important. Here, of course, it is important to add that the recognition must mainly come from us..ourselves. In other words, we can recognize its value in ourselves, without arrogance.
Personal growth: When we learn new things, develop our skills and improve as individuals, we feel a sense of confidence and satisfaction.
Contribution to society: When we volunteer some of our time, skills or energy, we feel good and we contribute to something bigger than ourselves.
However, the sense of importance through the contribution to society gives birth to the concept of "usefulness". It is important to remember that a sense of importance should not depend on external factors, such as the opinion of others, material possessions or publicity. The real importance comes from within us and is directly related to the duration of this feeling. As long as our importance is based on external factors and especially when our motivation is to impress, the feeling of importance lasts only a short time, almost instantaneously. On the contrary, if the sense of importance is based on things and values that have a deeper meaning for us, then it can have a very long duration until it is permanently present.
Therefore, it would be more correct to focus not on how we will feel important, but how the things we deal with will have substantial value and utility. Feeling important can contain arrogance, egoism or other negative elements which will not help us to go where we want, nor to have a long-term course.
The Roman emperor and stoic philosopher, Marcus Aurelius, said that "Every man is worth just so much as the things about which he busies himself". Therefore, in a way, it is worth reflecting on where we give value to our lives, where we consume our energy, where we focus our attention us;
